This should be at the end of a line, rather than making a new line.
When I set ‘notes are hidden’ I want the whole thing to look as if there are no notes, with some small reminder that that line does have some notes.
Having the icon take up a whole line is unsightly.
A minor aesthetic point

I completely agree with this.
I second the desire to see a small visual reminder/icon when a line has embedded notes. Otherwise you have to double-click the line to see / confirm presence of notes.

Just to make sure you’re aware, this is already doable , the request is for not making the icon take an entire line, right?

Also copying a reply from a duplicate post:
At the time of implementation, I thought about putting it at end of line. However, because items have various lengths, the icons would either look too spaced out (imagine you have an item with 2 words) or not aligned at all. Both looked worse than what we have currently, from my perspective.
As @Leonardo_Callie pointed out, the space before the item is quite occupied, especially when you hover the item.
Maybe there’s a better way?
