Free plan cannot add private collaborators by email — “You need Dynalist Pro” error

I’m posting here because I have been unable to add private collaborators by email on the Free plan.

I understand that anonymous public sharing has recently been restricted to Pro. However, I contacted Dynalist support and received the following reply:

Anonymous public sharing has been restricted to Pro, but sharing with a specific user by email should still work on the free plan. It sounds like you may be hitting an error that isn’t expected.

They asked which version of Dynalist I was using, and whether the error appears immediately when entering the email address or only after submitting.

I replied with the following details, but I have not received any further response since then.

I use Dynalist in the following environments:

  • MacBook Pro, macOS Tahoe 26.5.1

    • Safari browser

    • Dynalist desktop app

  • iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 26.5

    • Safari browser

    • Dynalist mobile app

The same issue occurs in all four environments.

The error does not appear immediately when I enter the email address. It appears only after I click the Add button to submit the private collaborator.

I also tested this with a newly created document. The steps were:

  1. Create a new document.

  2. Open the sharing dialog.

  3. Click Share this document.

  4. Leave Public share via link unchecked.

  5. Enter another user’s email address under Add a collaborator.

  6. Click Add.

Then the following message appears:

You need Dynalist Pro to perform this action.

So this happens when trying to add a specific user by email, not when enabling anonymous public sharing.

I have also confirmed that the same issue occurs for multiple other users, including users on Windows.

Could you please confirm whether this is a known bug, and whether there is any workaround for Free users who need to use private sharing by email?

I can provide screenshots if needed.

Thanks,
zan

The target user needs to already have a Dynalist account. Alternatively you can always subscribe to the pro plan to have this restriction lifted.

Unfortunately these restrictions had to be added as our free services were being abused for spamming campaigns and scams/phishing links.
