Copying and pasting text produces wonky, unusable results

Steps to reproduce

I created this sample text and then pasted it into a Gmail message.

Test text to see if this text copies correctly into a Gmail message. More test text.

Test text to see if this text copies correctly into a Gmail message. More test text. Test text to see if this text copies correctly into a Gmail message. More test text.

Test text to see if this text copies correctly into a Gmail message. More test text.

Expected result

I expect links to appear in the appropriate words.

Actual result

All the words in each paragraph are part of a long hyperlink.

Environment

Chrome OS. Pixelbook. Web app.
