I would like to use a lot of # tags, but if I do that, they will really clutter up the visibility of the main text, so this is a critical problem for me.

One way to hide tags is to put them in the item note, then hide notes. Or put them in the second+ line of the note, and “show 1st line”.
This will not completely hide the tags, even if you do “hide”, the labels of hidden notes will still be visible.
In addition, then I won’t be able to use notes as I did before.
