In other words, should “make checklist” cause all grandchild and greatgrandchild items to also be checklists?
I have a feeling nobody actually likes this default but maybe I’m wrong. Based on
- Make non-checkmarked children in a checkmarked list possible

Add non-checkable items under a checkable item
I too am not a fan. Maybe it was just an unintentional quirk of how checklists are coded.
- “Make checklist” for every level you want to be a checklist.
- “Make checklist” and all levels deeper are forced to have a checkbox.
